Summary:Questionnaire data from a 1977 sample of 292 Arab U graduates in Israel are used to examine the relationship between traditional (local, clan, & religious) identities & the political identity of Arabs in Israel. The results indicate that traditional identities are negatively correlated with Palestinian national identity & positively correlated with Israeli identity. This finding may explain why the colonial powers reinforced parochial identities among colonized people in Asia & Africa. By doing so, they intended to inhibit the emergence of a common national identity & thus to maintain loyalty to the colonial regime. 3 Tables, 20 References. HA
