THE PURIFICATION OF M-DINITROBENZENE FOR DETERMINATION OF 17-KETOSTEROIDS ACCORDING TO ZIMMERMANN

Summary: | Since highly pure m-dinitrobenzene is not commercially available, we were asked to prepare the substance in a form suitable for use as a reagent in the Zimmermann test for 17-ketosteroids. As the instructions given by Callow et al. (1938) and Rossi (1950) for the preparation of this substance do not give a satisfactory result we are giving the principles to be followed and detailed instructions for obtaining a product of sufficient purity. As Callow et al. (1938) suggested, we have used the purest available benzene in the preparation of m-dinitrobenzene since in this way the formation of derivatives of thiophene (Meyer et al., 1884) and toluene (Muraour, 1928) is avoided. The undesirable reaction products that must be removed are mononitrobenzene, o- and p-dinitrobenzene, polynitrocompounds, the dinitroazoxycompounds (Lobry de Bruyn, 1894) and nitrophenols (Wohl, 1899). The amino compounds, if present, are eliminated when excess nitric acid is removed by the washing |
