Summary:Industrial wastewater is a multifaceted mixture of both organic and inorganic compounds such as, heavy metals, ionic components, salts and nutrients. One of the most critical problems for manufacturing industries is the efficient removal of these compounds. Membrane filtration and disinfection technologies are being implemented in industries as a substitute to conventional wastewater treatment because of their ease of operation and higher performance. The current chapter discusses the mechanism of membrane-based technologies such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis and their applications, to treat industrial wastewater. Further, the main disinfection technologies, both traditional and advanced, for the treatment of industrial wastewater, as well as the probable generation of by-products, operating parameters and advantages and drawbacks are discussed in this chapter. The future challenges and outlook in the context of various membrane and disinfection treatment techniques for industrial wastewater are also discussed. This chapter will be beneficial for all the readers for attaining comprehensive knowledge on membrane based as well as disinfection techniques for the treatment of wastewater generated from various industries.
