Summary: | Background Dancers are aesthetic athletes prone to suffer from musculoskeletal injuries and pain. There are a lot of different types of dance all over the world and each type has it’s own physical stress on human body. For a few last decades there is an interest in literature about dance related injury and pain because of the potential effects of these problems on young dancers’ lifelong health profile. Different injury frequencies were mentioned for different types of dance in literature but no information is available about Turkish folk dancers. Also there is a need for an universal tool for monitoring pain status and it’s effect on dance. SEFIP questionnaire is a simple tool that was developed and validated to measure functional disability because of pain in dancers. The disability ranges between 0-4 for different 16 body region and total score is 64. Objectives The aim of this study was to show reliability and validity of Turkish Version of SEFIP (Agriya Baglı Fonksiyon Kaybi Olcegi) and monitor the musculoskeletal pain status in Turkish folk dancers. Methods The Turkish Version of SEFIP was performed on 64 dancers (42 female, 22 male) after their dance lesson and after a week second evaluation was performed for test-retest reliability. The validation standard was Visual Analog Scale (VAS) that scored the amount of self reported functional disability because of pain between 0 and 10. Results Dancers’ mean age was 21,16±4,75 and mean body mass index was 20,75±2,21. Test-retest reliability of the tool was ICC =0,807 (95% CI =0,701-0,878) (p>0,05). Correlation between the tool and VAS was r =0,672 (p<0,05). 93,75% of dancers have pain at least one body region, especially on feet, calves and knees. 25% of dancers had such pain that limited their dance and 9,37% had to stop dancing because of pain. Conclusions Our results have showed that Turkish Version of SEFIP which evaluates functional disability because of pain in dancers is a valid and reliable tool. According to SEFIP nonignorable percentage of Turkish folk dancers has serious musculoskeletal pain that limits their dancers. It is important to find out associated factors that cause functional disability in Turkish folk dancers with long term comprehensive follow-up studies to protect their lifelong musculoskeletal health.
