Summary: | By meticulously counting the number of labelled clones, and also quantifying the rate at which the inducing-mutations occurred, the authors were able to determine each crypt contained only between 5-7 active stem cells-far fewer than previously estimated from marker gene expression. In this prospective study, Oettl and colleagues collected blood samples (within 24 h of admission) from 67 consecutive cirrhotic patients hospitalised for acute decompensation and 18 consecutive non-cirrhotic patients with sepsis without evidence of cirrhosis admitted to intensive care unit. |
