Summary: | In 2000 he became the inaugural president of the British Renal Society, which advanced research and brought specialist professionals together, and from 2006 to 2013 he was the first national director of kidney care at the Department of Health, leading the implementation of the renal national service framework. O’Donoghue continued to be involved in quality improvement in public health at the highest level, advising in 2014, for example, on the Healthy Liverpool project’s streamlining of hospital services. After a year in Paris in 1989 on a travelling fellowship from the Medical Research Council, he moved to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to become a senior registrar before taking up his long term post as a consultant physician in Salford in 1992. |
