Summary:The authors of a prospective study published in Heart (2011;97:914-17) measured levels of NTproBNP in patients with AF of unknown time of onset and subsequently looked at thrombus formation within the left atrium. Following near drowning, several of the children were not diagnosed with long QT syndrome or were misdiagnosed as suffering from epilepsy, resulting in a delay in appropriate treatment with β-blockers, left cardiac sympathectomy or implantable defibrillator (Arch Dis Child 2011;96:704-7).
