Summary: | Many unicellular organisms are thought to undergo programmed cell death akin to apoptosis because they express many of the markers seen in metazoans. Apoptosis-like death markers were found to occur naturally in more than half of ookinetes of the rodent malaria, Plasmodium berghei in the mosquito midgut and in vitro. The aim of this study was to induce more apoptosis-like death in vitro and in vivo in a step towards the reduction or eliminate the midgut stages of the life cycle of Plasmodium as a strategy to control malaria transmission. |
