Summary:This book serves as both a scholarly and practical guide for teachers, school psychologists, and parents on helping boys and adolescent males grow up. It provides practitioners with a comprehensive handbook on understanding and responding to the developmental, cultural, and special concerns of boys and adolescent males. It attempts to provide answers to the following questions: (1) What are the developmental challenges of boys and adolescent males? (2) How can male youth achieve a mature and healthy sense of masculinity? (3) What are the culturally important issues for young men from different ethnic backgrounds? (4) what are the most effective methods for establishing rapport and intervening with special populations of boys? and (5) how can boys who are victims or have been victimized be helped? The 19 chapters are divided into 3 sections. Part One provides an explanation of how the psychological, career, and athletic development of boys, both adaptive and maladaptive, is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, social, cultural, and economic forces. Part Two covers cultural considerations pertaining to the counseling of African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, and White, Non-Hispanic boys. Part Three spans ten chapters on special populations of boys, including gay boys, teen fathers, sexually abused boys, boy sexual offenders, developmentally disturbed boys, shy and anxious boys, bullies, depressed boys, male youth gang members, and boy substance abusers.
