Summary: | Information on the effects of acid rain on the quality of water supplies is reviewed. Problems in assessing the risk, the possible effects of acidification on the concentrations in water of mercury, aluminium, copper, cadmium, lead, and asbestos, and on corrosion are considered. The potential risks for users of groundwater, surface water and cistern water are outlined and the populations affected in the U.S.A. are estimated. Aspects on which further research was required are indicated. A bibliography of 45 references is appended. |
