Summary:Prognostic characteristics of potential tsunamis in the East (Japan) Sea are discussed. Zones of tsunami sources for potential danger are selected using the seismic gap theory. Numerical model based on linear long wave theory is used to simulate the tsunami propagation from 28 potential tsunamigenic earthquakes. As a result, the synthetic tsunami catalogue is obtained for each coastal point along the east Korean coast. Statistical analysis of data for tsunami wave height distribution can be described by the log‐normal curve. On the average, maximal value of tsunami wave height in each point does not exceed the mean value of computed wave heights by more than six times.
