Surface observations of synthetic hydroxyapatite single crystal by atomic force microscopy

Surface topographies of the {101̄0} face of hydroxyapatite single crystals synthesized from hydrothermal solution were observed by atomic force microscopy and phase shift interferometry. Growth hillocks and step trains with 0.8 nm height were confirmed on the surface indicating that the g...

Summary:Surface topographies of the {101̄0} face of hydroxyapatite single crystals synthesized from hydrothermal solution were observed by atomic force microscopy and phase shift interferometry. Growth hillocks and step trains with 0.8 nm height were confirmed on the surface indicating that the growth proceeded through a layer-by-layer mechanism. All surfaces have micro etch pits showing that the crystals were slightly dissolved in the final stage.
