Summary:Microcontact printing has been used to prepare patterned self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cholesterylpolyethylenoxy thiol. These patterned SAMs were used as supports for the formation of integral supported lipid bilayers. Biofunctionality was confirmed by addition of valinomycin ionophores and gramicidin ion channels. Impedance spectroscopy of the resulting bilayer structures, incorporating valinomycin and the gramicidin, showed the expected ion selectivity.
