Summary:— A procedure was proposed for the direct determination of changes in the composition of the adsorbed complex of freshwater terrigenous material upon its entry into a marine environment. It was shown that changes in the composition of the adsorbed complex calculated from the difference of major cation contents before and after contact with seawater closely match data obtained by the proposed method, which eliminates side effects related to the displacement of sorption–desorption equilibria at the stage of water-soluble salt removal during the use of the traditional method of the determination of adsorbed complex composition.
