Summary: | Dolan comments on the study by Kuppermann and colleagues presenting important results from a clinical trial evaluating the effect of an intervention designed to facilitate informed decision making by pregnant women (with widely varying levels of health literacy and numeracy) confronted by the myriad genetic screening and testing options. She stresses that learning more about women's values and preferences and providing educational tools for women to use in their clinicians' offices, are essential for widespread implementation. Only through such efforts can the promise of personalized genomic medicine be fully realized during the prenatal period. |
