Summary: | Reactions of Fenton's reagent with chlorobenzene and its intermediate oxidation products were evaluated as a method of destroying chlorobenzene and other chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons in wastes. Fenton's reagent, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous ion, produced hydroxyl radicals which oxidized the chlorinated compounds. The role of pH and the presence or absence of oxygen in determining the processes occurring and the products obtained were assessed. The observed pH-dependence and the product distributions occurring suggested that complexes of aromatic intermediates with iron and oxygen might regulate pathways. There are 31 references. |
