Interpreting Teasing Through Texting: The Role of Emoji, Initialisms, Relationships, and Rejection Sensitivity in Ambiguous SMS

Summary: | Teasing, a common form of communication that involves ambiguity, is rendered more ambiguous through text messaging as the communicative markers that signal intent are restricted compared to face-to-face interaction. Although texting makes the ambiguity of teasing more prominent, nevertheless, there are elements of communication through texting that impact the interpretation of teasing texts, including message features (Study 1: the "lol" initialism and the "winking face with tongue" emoji), social context (Study 2: the sender-receiver relationship), and an individual's rejection sensitivity (Study 1 and Study 2). In Study 1, the effects of message features were examined using a Latin square design with a sample of N = 490 undergraduate student participants. In Study 2, the effects of social context were examined using a classic counterbalancing design with a sample of N = 394 undergraduate student participants. The use of emoji and closer relationships resulted in more positive ratings of teasing messages, but the "lol" initialism did not contribute to more positive ratings of teasing. Across both studies, rejection sensitivity was related to more negative ratings of ambiguous text messages.
La taquinerie, une forme de communication courante qui implique l'ambiguïté, est rendue plus ambiguë par la messagerie texte car les marqueurs de communication qui signalent l'intention sont restreints par rapport à l'interaction en face à face. Bien que la messagerie texte rende l'ambiguïté de la taquinerie plus importante, certains éléments de la communication par messages textes ont néanmoins un impact sur l'interprétation des messages textes de taquinerie, notamment les caractéristiques du message (étude 1 : le sigle « lol » et l'emoji « clin d'œil avec la langue »), le contexte social (étude 2 : la relation expéditeur-destinataire) et la sensibilité au rejet d'une personne (étude 1 et étude 2). Public Significance Statement
Teasing can build relationships when interpreted positively. Teasing increasingly occurs through texting, which makes teasing more difficult to interpret. Our study found that teasing text messages were perceived more positively when an emoji ("winking face with tongue") was used compared to texts that used an initialism ("lol") or plain texts, as were teasing texts sent in the context of a close friendship. People who were more sensitive to rejection interpreted the teasing texts more negatively. |
