Summary:Thirty years after the first observation of halide encapsulation by katapinand receptors, the authors have utilized {sup 19}F NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with X-ray crystallography to provide snapshots of fluoride binding in an aza cryptand, 1, over a range of pH values. The results provide definitive solution and solid-state evidence for the incorporation of fluoride in the cavity. This is the first study that integrates crystallographic findings with {sup 19}F NMR data as a means of understanding the binding patterns of fluoride as a function of pH.
