Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the US, accounting for 44% of new cases of treated ESRD in 2002. Burrows et al discuss the analysis conducted by the CDC to examine the trends in ESRD attributed to diabetes mellitus. A CDC editorial note is also included.
