Summary: | Magnesian garnet (pyrope) is a typical indicator mineral of kimberlites and provides important information on the genesis of mantle mineral assemblages. The very first review and genetic types of garnet in kimberlites and peridotites has revealed a distinguishing compositional trait of the pyrope from the greatest depths: this pyrope has elevated Cr and relatively low Ca concentrations. Later Ca and Cr proportions in mantle garnets were utilized as the basis for one of the currently most important criteria of the possible diamond potential of kimberlites. |
