Summary:Studies of N-(3-ethyl-6-hydroxybenzyl)-N-methylethanolamine and some structural analogues showed that N-(2-hydroxybenzyl) ethanolamine derivatives possessed the correct structure for interaction with the metal substrate and film formation. The preparation of the parent amine, isolation of its ferric complex from solution, and the relation of these two compounds to film formation on steel by the amine are described.
