Summary:An overview article summarizes the findings of 4 international panels that combined basic epidemiological knowledge with clinical obstetric and pediatric observations to arrive at recommendations concerning the definition, prognosis, and screening, diagnosis and intervention strategies for gestational diabetes (GD). Key studies related to these recommendations are discussed. The recommendations included that all pregnant women be screened for glucose intolerance by blood glucose measurement between weeks 24-28g pregnancy, that all women with GD receive nutritional counseling consistent with ADA recommendations for caloric distribution, and that close surveillance of mother and fetus be maintained in all cases of GD. Other specific recommendations also are described. (WZ)
