Summary:The CSIRO Division of Fuel Technology has commissioned a Leco SC-132 analyser for sulphur analysis. A method has been developed for the Leco analyser to provide rapid determination of total sulphur in raw shale, spent shale and shale oil samples. Tests were carried out on nine Australian oil shales, spent shales derived from Fischer assays, shale oils derived from Fischer assays and bench scale fluidized-bed steam pyrolysis experiments. The tests indicated that the method yields results comparable with those obtained by modified high temperature and reduction methods. The suitability of the method for determining the distribution of sulphur in the retort products has been demonstrated with satisfactory elemental sulphur balances of Fischer assay retort products for nine oil shales.
