Abstract | Two major categories of ozone effects on the respiratory tract are considered: impairment in the mechanical functions of the lung, and structural injury or functional impairment of specific types of cells in the respiratory tract. Data from controlled studies done over the past decade suggest that ozone-induced lung impairment measured by changes in forced expiratory volume occur as an exponential function of ozone concentration, possibly as a non-linear function of ventilation, and possibly as a linear function of exposure. The results of studies of cellular and tissue effects in experimental animals can reasonably be extrapolated to humans. They reveal increases in collagen content and thickening of septa between alveoli in the centriacinar region of the lung. |

The results of studies of cellular and tissue effects in experimental animals can reasonably be extrapolated to humans. They reveal increases in collagen content and thickening of septa between alveoli in the centriacinar region of the lung. Ozone is an allotrope of oxygen which occurs in the planetary boundary layer. At excessive levels, ozone has been demonstrated to induce perturbations in a number of biological systems and to produce oxidative degradation in certain nonbiological materials. It has also been implicated as a contributor, to varying degrees and under specified atmospheric conditions, to the chemical and physical processes in ambient air which produce such particulate- and aerosol-related phenomena as acidic precipitation and deposition, atmospheric visibility reduction, and climate modification. Ozone is a critical pollutant, regulated under Sections 108 and 109 of the Clean Air Act (CAA). Ozone has been shown to produce respiratory symptoms and short-term transient changes in lung function in human volunteers; it is clearly a respiratory irritant. Ozone has been shown to affect several components of the host-defense system, leading to decreased resistance to infection. |
