Summary:A data chart is presented for detailed field description of sediment successions containing glacial diamicts and associated sediments. The design is based on field experience from modern glacial environments in Greenland and Iceland and ancient deposits in Denmark. The data chart proposes an integrated scheme that provides a synthesis of existing approaches to sediment description in the field. Three examples of the use of the data chart and logging technique illustrate its wide variability in comparison with the limited sedimentology practised by many scientists working with ancient glacial diamicts. It is concluded that the data chart might be a useful approach for recognition of the various possible types of glacial diamicts, but it does not assume to be a complete approach; it is the object of continuing discussion and can be extended or modified.
