Summary:Sodium reduction is an urgent public health priority that should be addressed by coordinated attention by multiple levels of government, the food industry, and other diverse stakeholders. Average daily sodium intake for US adults is more than double the recommended dietary limit for the majority of this population, leading to adverse health outcomes and economic impacts. However, packaged and restaurant foods often contain excessive amounts of sodium which limits the choices of US consumers about how much sodium they consume in those foods. USDA and FDA recently collected public comments and research to help inform future sodium reduction-related activities. Gunn et al discuss CDC's current strategies to reduce sodium intake, including helping consumers make healthful choices, expanding educational efforts, and monitoring of the sodium content of the food supply.
