Abstract | The session will assemble a group of persons from outside the ASA knowledgeable about ethical issues and norms for a panel discussion. In 1999, the ASA adopted a set of revised ethical guidelines for statistical practice. The guidelines are available at http:// www.tcnj.edu/~ethcstat/. The Committee is now charged with (a) promoting the use of the guidelines as a tool for fostering awareness of ethical issues among statisticians and those using statistical methods and data and (b) reviewing the new guidelines with a view to recommending possible needed improvements and revisions. The chair of the ASA Committee on Professional Ethics, William Seltzer, will chair the session and several members of the Committee are expected to actively participate in the floor discussion. The session is designed to be of interest to a wide range of statisticians by providing a forum for an exchange views on ethical issues after a stimulating discussion of the topic. The American Statistical Association (ASA), a scientific and educational society founded in Boston in 1839, is the second oldest professional society in the United States. For 160 years, ASA has been providing its nearly 18,000 members serving in academia, government, and industry and the public with up- to-date, useful information about statistics. The ASA has a proud tradition of service to statisticians, quantitative scientists, and users of statistics across a wealth of academic areas and applications. |
