Summary:The proposed 1,090-MW Northern Pass Transmission Line, linking hydroelectric power resources from Quebec to southern New Hampshire and the broader New England market, has advanced with the U.S. Department of Energy's approval Nov. 16 of a record of decision and presidential permit for the project, which has drawn fire from environmentalists. First proposed in 2010, the $1.6 billion Northern Pass project has been "subject to multiple layers of federal and state government permitting regulations, a nearly 4,000-page Environmental Impact Statement," and adjustment of its planned route in response to input from federal, state and local stakeholders, the DOE said in its news release. "Smart energy infrastructure development projects like Northern Pass -- which support a reliable and resilient grid, promote economic growth, lower energy costs, and benefit the environment we all share -- shouldn't take this long to approve," Energy Secretary Rick Perry said in the DOE's news release.
