To develop assumptions for the Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) model, case studies of successful PACE programs in Denver, CO, and Chattanooga, TN, were undertaken. The experiences of these programs offer perspectives into an established program that is expanding, and a relatively new site starting up. Ten key lessons learned from these programs are: 1. A PACE interdisciplinary team can serve more people than the typical 120-bed nursing home. 2. Enrollment growth is key to success. 3. Programs can include assisted living. 4. Marketing strategies should be tailored to the environment. 5. Supporting the family caregiver is a key clinical and financial strategy. 6. Avoiding unnecessary nursing home placements is essential. 7. Inpatient utilization can be managed by the interdisciplinary team within the model. 8. Programs should plan for growth. 9. Programs achieve financial success. 10. Programs can be successful as part of a system or freestanding.
