Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC) is still thought of, by many, as more a subject of controversy here in Syracuse, than as a resource for economic growth and development. Mention Syracuse Research, and people often think back to the '60s, and the student protest which then engulfed SRC because of its research on behalf of the Department of Defense. While SRC does continue to gain the larger share of its research and development contracts from the federal government (about 93 per cent during fiscal 1985,) with 65 per cent of its workload consisting specifically of defense work -- "protective", not offensive systems research, according to Dr. Kenneth Kun, new president of the applied research and development organization -- former staff members of SRC have been responsible for some $80 to $90 million worth of economic development here in Central New York, according to Kun. Kun points to Anaren Microwave, Knowledge Systems, and the Regional Learning Center as locally based corporate entities organized by former employees of his not-for-profit corporation. (excerpt)
