Summary: | The second part of a series on how to protect everyone in your facility from armed intruders is presented. One of the most overlooked components in an "active shooter" response policy in a healthcare facility also is the main focus of your day-to-day routine: the care and well-being of your residents. The traditional suggestion to survive an active shooter event, as outlined by the US Department of Homeland Security, is the "run, hide, fight" doctrine, an approach that is sound but does not address a big challenge within the realm of long-term care: the well-being of the residents. In an active shooter event, they slightly modified the run, hide, fight approach. For ease of remembering, they call their active shooter safety action plan "the four outs." These are: 1. Get out. 2. Hide out. 3. Keep out. 4. Take out. |
