"It's probably the greatest advance for the safety of the residents of the borough in a long time," [Jospeh Renne] said. "We've had interference for years, and hopefully this will address all of that." Garbled transmissions have been a problem within the borough for some time. It began in 1996, when the Totowa Police Department upgraded its own radio system, which included a feature that boosted the strength of transmissions. That, in turn, caused interference with West Paterson's calls. "With Totowa upgrading their frequency, they were stepping all over our communication," [Garry Colletti] said. "It was a potential dangerous situation. This is something that we need in town, and it's long overdue." West Paterson, Totowa, and Little Falls once shared the same low band frequency, but Little Falls also switched its own frequency in 1992.
