Summary:The planet Saturn reaches opposition on Aug. 7. Saturn will then be directly opposite the Sun as seen from Earth (to put it another way, Earth is now directly between Saturn and the Sun). Because of this, Saturn is also as close as it can get to Earth, so we'll have good views of it throughout the entire night this month. After sunset, Saturn appears as as bright yellow star-like object low in the southeast. At midnight the ringed planet is well up in the south. And before dawn, Saturn is low in the southwest sky. The full Moon passes Saturn on Aug. 12-13.
