Summary:Aug. 7 - Moon at apogee (251,520 miles from Earth.) 30th anniversary of the first photograph taken of Earth by a satellite (Explorer 6) in 1959. Aug. 9 - First quarter moon. Second atomic bomb falls on Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945. Aug. 16 - Full moon: total lunar eclipse. Hampton Roads will be one of the best places on Earth to see this event: The excitement begins at 9:21 p.m., when the first "bite" is taken out of the moon's left edge. The bite grows until 10:20, when we reach totality, and the darkened moon takes on a deep ruddy glow. At three minutes to midnight, totality ends, and at four minutes to 1 a.m., the disc of the moon is restored to its accustomed roundness. Aug. 30 - In 1983 the first black American (Guy Bluford) is launched into space (third launch of Challenger, 8th shuttle launch: Truly, Brandenstein, D. Gardner, Bluford, W. Thornton.) First launch of Discovery (12th shuttle launch) in 1984 (Hartsfield, Coats, Resnik, Hawley, Mullane, C. Walker.)
