[Nina Hickson] should not be allowed to judge as a profession, as she has no regard for the truth. She has a driver's license enabling her to legally visit the airport and a license to practice law enabling her to qualify for the bench. Too bad there is no license to be a parent to a 4-year-old. John Blake recounts the subtlety of evil in Tolkien's work, but his article should have gone further. "The Lord of the Rings" (the book) ends even more triumphantly than the movie. Many scenes not in the movie describe the intimate struggle of good and evil and portray the character of those who engage in it. After seeing "Return of the King" and "The Last Samurai," I was discussing with my husband my angst over the glorification of war and the increasing violence in the world. Almost in answer to this was the wonderful article by Mark O'Keefe ("Slain journalist's father forges interfaith dialogue," Faith & Values, Jan. 3) about Judea Pearl, Daniel Pearl's father. His desire to turn his son's slaying into an "opportunity for dialogue between Muslims and Jews" was inspiring and amazing.
