In the newspaper, I read of guns and bombs in city streets from the Middle East to Northern Ireland, grenades in small-town Elberton and New York funerals unfinished nearly a year later. I read of children stolen like cars and killed like game, pilots wanting guns and religions stretched to shattering as their humanity is revealed. I read of women whose least concern is unequal pay and about children with no future, as the girls are taught nothing and the boys are taught war. Recently a Cessna 150 that had taken off from Falcon Field in Peachtree City made a crash landing within a mile of my home. The pilot and student had been executing a maneuver in which they cut the engine and after a "controlled" descent restarted it. Well, in this case, the engine did not start again. Now that we have managed to push smokers outdoors, we have a letter writer calling for outdoor smoking restrictions ("Outdoor attractions should ban smoking," @issue, July 29) because she is "unable to enjoy outdoor activities because of smokers poisoning the air."
