| Abstract | MY STAFF and I read carefully the May 26 Viewpoint article, "Indian burial sites deserve equal respect," written by Bob EagleClaw Parkins. I agree that respect should be given to the graves of American Indians. If there is a known burial associated with a site, state law also requires that the director of the state Historic Preservation Office convene an ad hoc committee to develop appropriate conditions for that specific permit. Members of the committee must represent known or presumed lineal descendants, private and public organizations that have cultural affiliation to the presumed contents of the site, the Council for West Virginia Archaeology, and the West Virginia Archaeological Society. |
