The TKO victory punctuated a nasty promotion in which [Ricardo Mayorga] had insulted [Oscar De La Hoya]'s Mexican heritage, slurred his wife and family and said De La Hoya wasn't man enough to beat him. But De La Hoya, who was coming off a 20-month layoff and a ninth-round TKO loss to Bernard Hopkins in his last fight, proved more than man enough to dethrone Mayorga and take away his WBC 154-pound title. In all, he knocked Mayorga down three times - once in the first round, twice in the sixth - and put on a boxing clinic. [Jay Nady] warned Mayorga for hitting behind the head after he landed two blows behind De La Hoya's ear. Mayorga threw three straight rabbit punches in a clinch during the fifth round and received a second warning from Nady. De La Hoya was in complete control at that point and was on his way to knocking out Mayorga, whose legs were getting stiff and heavy. De La Hoya opened up the sixth round with an 11-punch flurry that dazed Mayorga and sent him to the canvas on one knee. As he was down, Mayorga looked over at De La Hoya, who was standing in the neutral corner. He had a look of resignation in his eyes. But when Nady asked him if he wanted to continue, Mayorga said yes.
