The News presented its proposal at a brief face-to-face session yesterday evening, after whichboth sides returned to separate rooms on the fourth floor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. That left the mediator, former Labor Secretary William J. Usery, to engage in shuttle diplomacy. The level of press staffing has been a major source of dispute between the two sides. The News has sought major concessions from several of its unions, including the pressmen, to save more than $70 million a year in costs. |
