Summary: | "Bo knows football . . . Bo knows baseball . . . Bo knows basketball" has made "Bo knows" arguably the most pervasive phrase of 1990, surpassing, certainly, any George Bush pronouncement and probably even any Bart Simpson outcry. Jeff Millar and Bill Hinds crafted the comic-page parody in their Tank McNamara strip. In one panel, George Bush states, "Bo knows foreign policy," and in the next, Bo asks, "If we win the cold war and lose Gorbachev as leader of socialism, what price victory?" In another panel, Albert Einstein theorizes, "Bo knows particle physics," and in the next, Bo predicts, "The supercolliding superconductor will give us a window onto the creation of the universe." The director of the Nike gems is a perfectionist named Joe Pytka, an enlightened despot who screams at everyone, including Bo. Once Pytka wanted to get a shot of Bo, in football uniform, running right through the camera. He wanted it to look as if Bo were coming through the lens and into the living room. Pytka shot the scene three or four times, and each time, five or six inches from the lens, Bo veered sharply to his left or sharply to his right. |
