Jackie Schmid, assistant director of Inter-Marketing, Berlin Desk, says finding a room in Berlin "is a problem at the moment." She advises securing a room before leaving home through a travel agent or by contacting Dial Berlin in St. Louis, which has seven luxury hotels in Berlin (800) 237-5469. (A spokeswoman there said it's not the media that's taking up the space, it's "tourists who want a piece of the wall.") If the St. Louis office has no openings, she says, check out smaller hotels through the Berlin Tourist Office, Europa Center, 1000 Berlin 30, West Germany. West Berlin has 394 hotels including 40 guesthouses and youth hostels with a total of 5,200 beds. The other hotels have a total of 25,700 beds. Advance reservations are particularly important for visits Jan. 26-Feb. 4, when International Green Week Berlin, a food/agricultural/forestry convention, takes place in West Berlin. On UTA, choices include Bordeaux, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes and Toulouse. Neither airline is including Paris. The free ticket must be used on the same flight or flights. There are no holiday blackouts, but some exceptions depending on load. Among the cheapest tickets is a UTA midweek round-trip to Marseille for $730 ($760 weekends).
