Summary:The funding promise came after the group gave the town board a petition signed by 620 Melville and Old Bethpage residents demanding noise barriers for the outdoor target range, a three-acre tract amid sandpits on Spagnoli Road in Melville. The range is operated by Huntington Town and is just east of the Nassau-Suffolk border, within earshot of residential areas on both sides of the county line. Bill Buitenkant, an Old Bethpage resident who has spearheaded the campaign for noise barriers, said yesterday he was "delighted" by [Toni Rettaliata]'s promise. But he cautioned that "setting money aside is not always the same as spending money" and said he would wait to see whether noise barriers were actually built before making a final judgment on the town's action.
