Summary:As the second graph shows, Milwaukee hasn't been as successful as other cities in reducing crime. While crime is down 12% in Milwaukee since 1992, it is down 17% in Cleveland, 21% in Detroit, 32% in Washington and 33% in Minneapolis. Milwaukee's murder rate is more than double the rate in San Francisco and almost triple the rate in New York City. We are four times as likely to be murdered in Milwaukee than we would be if we lived in Seattle, St. Paul or Portland -- and more than ten times as likely as in Kenosha, Madison or Green Bay. So 2004 is no time for the mayor of Milwaukee to be content adding more tax money to police spending and hoping for the best. Little one, whoever you are, wherever you are, there are little ones just like you all over the world -- or, for our purposes, all over Milwaukee. Their skin may be different from yours, and their homes may be different from yours. Their schools may be different from yours, and their lands may be different from yours. Their lives may be different from yours, and their words may be very different from yours.
