Abstract B.C. students in public colleges and universities received a total of $52.8 million in grants from the provincial government this year. That was in addition to $140 million in provincial loans to public and private school students. The banks cited the high default rate at career colleges -- about 45 per cent of loan-receiving students in B.C. attending career colleges don't make their payments -- as one of the reasons for wanting out of the student loan business after five years. There are no plans to eliminate career colleges from the student loan program in B.C. because the province wants to help students gain access to private job-training programs, especially those that are not available at public colleges and universities, [Tara Wilson] said.
