Abstract The official estimate for Algeria's economic loss associated with this burden in eight years of conflict was put by the government in 2000 at about US$20 billion. However, this remains significantly underestimated. The way the government calculated this loss is by counting how many state-owned enterprises were damaged, how many bridges were destroyed and how many state buildings were burnt. The damage, calculated in terms of Algeria's currency, would then be translated into US dollars using prevailing exchange rates.
