Abstract We examine theoretically production of doubly strange hypernuclei, [inline image][inline image] and [super]16 sub(C, in double-charge exchange [inline image][inline image] reactions using a distorted-wave impulse approximation. The inclusive K[super]+ spectrum at the incident momentum p) sub(K)[super]-=1.8 GeV/c and scattering angle [theta] sub(lab=0[deg] is estimated in a one-step mechanism, K[super]-p--K[super]+[Xi][super]- via [Xi][super]- doorways caused by a [Xi][super]-p- coupling. The calculated spectrum in the [Xi][super]- bound region indicates that the integrated cross sections are on the order of 7-12 nb/sr for significant 1[super]- excited states with [inline image][inline image] configurations in [super]16) sub(C) via the doorway states of the spin-stretched [inline image][inline image] in [inline image][inline image] due to a high momentum transfer q sub([Xi][super]-[similar, equals]400 MeV/c. The [Xi][super]- admixture probabilities of these states are on the order of 5-9%. However, populations of the 0[super]+ ground state with [inline image][inline image] and the 2[super]+ excited state with [inline image][inline image] are very small. The sensitivity of the spectrum on the [Xi]N- coupling strength enables us to extract the nature of [Xi]N- dynamics in nuclei, and the nuclear (K[super]-,K[super]+) reaction can extend our knowledge of the S=-2 world.)
