Summary:The object of this issue of Recherches Sociologiques et Anthropologiques is to examine the role and function of the sociologist in the urban setting, and what contributions he or she can make in the amelioration of society at large. For this purpose, the contributors proceed in three main sections: an assessment of the historical relationship between sociology and the use of sociology in the city, a discussion of the importance and contribution of various sociologists for society, and a reflection on the conditions connected with the successful diffusion of sociological findings beyond the scientific world. From these points of discussion, it emerges that the continuing interaction between the researcher and those studied seems to suggest that a means to enhance the ameliorative effect of the sociologist in the urban setting can be established.
