Abstract An examination of the progressive gains in socially recognized autonomous power made by the field of sports 1890-1970, focusing on the field's capacity for exporting & imposing sports categories & values. Informed by Pierre Bourdieu's notions of "field" & "relative autonomy," it is suggested that the autonomy of the French sports field will remain incomplete. The polarization of participants in the sports field stems from differences in actors' attitudes toward dependence (adherence to class, race, & gender-based structural factors reflecting principles of the nonsports community) vs autonomy (amateurism, professionalism). A comparison of the relationships between British & French sports policy & sports field shows greater sports autonomy in GB vs a centrally organized & controlled sports scheme in France. 47 References.
