Summary:An investigation of the nat'l character of the Japanese people from a cultural anthrop'al point of view which concentrates closely on the personality of the individual, society, & culture. This approach is distinguished from the historical, literary & philosophical approaches previously used to investigate this problem. All approaches, however, seem to point to the trait of 'reliance on others' as being a major nat'l characteristic of the Japanese. The writer, after theoretically studying the connection between the child-rearing pattern & the nat'l character, investigates the relation of the characteristic of 'reliance upon others' in the nat'l character of the Japanese people to the child-rearing pattern.
