Summary:The article's intent is to analyze prisons in terms of their logic & function, arguing that prisons are paradigmatic institutions of social & disciplinary control in contemporary societies. This analysis takes a historical perspective, examining the period in Mexican history when Porfirio Diaz ruled the country. This period marked an era in which prisons were a mechanism for the containment of political dissent. The article also examines the sense & nature of political crime, outlining various aspects of daily prison life in terms of the position & meaning of being a political prisoner. The conclusion reached is that the use of political prisons corresponds to institutional dynamics that owe their existence to the earliest manifestations of modern Mexican society & the modern Mexican state. 19 References.
